Parents and Children

Family Therapy and 360 Degree Whole Child Assessments

Secure parent child relationships, anchored in reflection, provide the foundation for lifelong mental health. They are also a protective factor against stress and trauma and provide the basis for making lasting, impactful changes in family life. Dr. Denham works with families who need support because of transitions, developmental, or mental health concerns.

Parents who work on their reflective capacity see significant changes in the quality of the relationship with their children and changes in the behavior of their children.

Children can use reflective skills to improve self-regulation, including building awareness and developing flexible ways of expressing feelings.

Parent and child therapy

Many parents consult with Dr. Denham and associates when they have concerns about their children’s mental health, behavior, or developmental issues. Dr. Denham screens for developmental issues and works with parents to make sure they are accessing appropriate services. She has an expertise in helping families with a complex intersection of needs including neurological or developmental, life transitions, or trauma.

All services for families begin with a meeting with parents or primary caregivers. During this time, we figure out a plan that may include parenting consultations, family therapy, child therapy, and referrals to other child specialists. These specialists could include developmental pediatricians, developmental play therapists, neuro-psychologists, occupational and speech therapists, and home and school visiting specialists. Again, each plan is geared towards the specific and unique needs of the family.

360 degree whole child AND FAMILY SUPPORT

Dr. Denham and her team offer a specialized service designed to streamline and support the assessment and treatment process. Some families come to us with multiple treatment providers in place and needing coordination and communication between treatment providers. Many families come to us with a lot of questions but unsure where to start. We provide an initial in-depth assessment of a family’s strengths and needs, speak to whoever is already in place supporting the family, and develop a plan for ongoing coordination, treatment planning and support. We facilitate relationships with other family and pediatric experts who are trusted members of our community and follow your family’s journey, even if your needs take you outside of our immediate practice. We tailor our services to your specific needs and are committed to forming a relationship with you that supports you over the long term. REFLECTIVE PARENTING GROUP

A 12-week evidence-based group for parents of young children

Research demonstrates that parents who can make connections between their childrens’ feelings and behavior (and their own) are likely to have children who can tolerate stress, are aware of and can express feelings and have secure, connected relationships with their parents. These abilities are linked to better relationships and improved mental health across the life span. The Reflective Parenting Group is for parents who are looking for a significant change process based in research. The group will increase your capacity to understand and connect with your children and increase your confidence in navigating the difficult feelings that come with parenting. Parents who participate in these groups see improvement in the quality of their relationship with their child and also in their childrens’ behaviors.

While the group is geared to the unique needs of the parents involved, it also covers weekly topics including the role of temperament, responding to distress and angry feelings and discipline. If requested, the process can add in a comprehensive, evidence based-assessment of parent growth areas. In consultation with Dr. Denham and her team, parents can develop individual goals and observational and reflective practices to support those goals. The weekly groups serve as opportunities to reflect on, explore and encourage these new practices.
